This interview with Agapita Smith was conducted on October 2, 2019 at the Dekalb Public Library in DeKalb, Illinois. Smith was born in the Philippines in 1945 and came to NIU in 1972 to pursue a degree in Journalism. Though she initially planned to return home upon completing her degree, political developments in the Philippines made this infeasible, and Smith has lived in DeKalb ever since. Smith describes her life as a Fulbright student and the community of international students she encountered at NIU. Smith met and married Jerry Smith, who worked for a media company in DeKalb at the time. After completing her degree, Smith worked as an instructor, and later a dean, at Kishwaukee College. Smith describes the student activism she witnessed at both NIU and Kishwaukee College during the 1970s. Smith goes on to discuss her involvement with various local non-profits, including the NIU Alumni Association. Smith comments on the various changes she has witnessed over the course of her relationship with the university, including decreasing enrollment and shifts in program emphasis. Smith ends by encouraging alumni to give back to NIU.
