Postcard Collection

The Regional History Center's postcard collection provides a unique source for photographic and artistic documentation of people, places and events, with the majority being produced during the 1900-1940 period. Many of the cards in this collection came from four manuscript collections held by the Regional History Center: W.W. Embree (RC 2); Sabin-Van Arsdale (RC 32); Kavadas (RC 50); and Hall Family (RC 117). A fair amount of the collection consists of cards depicting scenes or events from the Northern Illinois region and Illinois. Also representative in the collection are postcards of other states, national holidays and special occasions, American Indians, foreign countries, advertisements, and calendars and blotters.

For more information about this collection, please see the Center's finding aid.

Regional History Center, Northern Illinois University, STARVED ROCK, ILLINOIS STATE PARK, Contains about 1,000 acres, located in La Salle County. There is no other place in the state where one may spend more profitably 'the summer days in Illinois', and in which one may enjoy more rest and lasting pleasure. The Park is a perfect wonderland of forest beauty, where summer days pass like a happy dream. Boat Racing Rockford, Ill.
Regional History Center, Northern Illinois University, Rockford, Mr Weaver, I am mailing you a post card which I think will 'look good to you' - I ran across this card while looking for some different views than I had and where I have put the x that looks very much like the 'Gloria' to me, is it? Mr. Brown had a number of us out last night to play 500 so asked Mr. Helmer to give me your address as I wanted to mail you a P.C.S. He thinks if it is the boat it must have been taken when he was on his vacation. It looked to me like the flag and pennant. I should like to receive a P.C. from your place if not too much trouble. View From Starved Rock, Illinois State Park.
Regional History Center, Northern Illinois University, STARVED ROCK, ILLINOIS STATE PARK. Contains about 1,000 acres, located in La Salle County. Located on the curving shores of the Illinois River and not far from the main west entrance to this Park is the famous STARVED ROCK. A view from the top is most inspiring; the flat summit is about one-half an acre in area, and covered with forest trees and bushes. Altho it is nearly 200 feet in hight, the steep cliffs are now easy to ascend; for enterprise has girded its almost perpendicular sides with stairs and bridges of iron. Here every evening hundreds of tourists view the ever-changing scenes painted by the hand of Nature, as the golden sun drifts among the clouds, reflecting upon the water a panorama of wondrous beauty., Lasalle, Place, Starved Rock State Park
Turtle Rock, As Seen From Indian Trail, Starved Rock, Illinois State Park.
Regional History Center, Northern Illinois University, STARVED ROCK, ILLINOIS STATE PARK, Contains about 1,000 acres, located in La Salle County. To many visitors, the most interesting scenes in the State Park are at the summit of a high rocky bluff along the river bank, and over the historic Indian trails, where many picturesque rock formations are revealed in bold relief: some resemble faces, some old castles, while others remind us of some pre-historic animal or reptile. Here, as in centuries past, TURTLE ROCK displays its grotesque features., LaSalle, Place, Starved Rock State Park

St. Louis Canyon, Starved Rock, Illinois State Park.
Regional History Center, Northern Illinois University, STARVED ROCK, ILLINOIS STATE PARK, Contains about 1,000 acres, located in La Salle County. New wonders unfold themselves at every turn in this historic Park. The scenes in the ST. LOUIS canyon are most fascinating, for everywhere here one beholds 'the fragments of an earlier world', which gives to this delightful scenery an added charm. Our State Park commission has made no mistake in reserving this property as a recreation ground for the tourist., Lasalle, Place, Starved Rock State Park

Scene in the Illinois Canyon, Starved Rock, Illinois State Park.
Regional History Center, Northern Illinois University, STARVED ROCK, ILLINOIS STATE PARK, Contains about 1,000 acres, located in La Salle County. Certain localities, like certain people, please us at first sight. Sometimes we cannot tell exactly why this is. The fact remains, however, they please us. The ILLINOIS canyon is such a palce; the scene itself is beautiful, yet we enjoy the walk, the murmur of the cascade, the rippling water in the little brook, the wild flowers beneath our feet, the echo of forest songsters all so restful. Just alone with Nature!, Lasalle, Place, Starved Rock State Park
