Ms. Lynette Werdin donated the Wells/Hartwell letters to the Northern Illinois Regional History Center in June of 2000.
The collection consists of thirteen letters (or portions thereof) A. Levi Wells sent home to family and friends in Kaneville, Illinois during his service in the Civil War. The letters date from November 1861 to October 1863, and give a unique first-hand perspective into the tribulations, glory and politics of war.
