599. Wendell Phillips to William H. Herndon.

[undated]

Dear Sir

I said Lincoln voluntarily added to the domain of the Slave Act of '50 territory which had inadvertently been omitted — (I believe that Terr'y was the D.C.) — & on that account I called him "the Slave Hound of Illinois" — [Gay?] tried to wriddle their candidate out of the "sin —

I never charged A.L. with insincerity hypocracy or that sort of thing — Said that, heedlessly for party ends — to conciliate &c.&c. he volunteered to extend that odious fraud

Y
W. Phillips

I think now exactly as I did then — A.L. had merits but he had spots & large ones on his disk.
