588. Horace White to Jesse W. Weik.

My dear Sir:

I have returned the MS today, having kept it only two hours. Please acknowledge receipt when you get it.

The photo of Lincoln is good in one sense & bad in another. It represents him with no more expression than a post & yet it is just as he would look when sitting for a photo & putting on his most serious look, as though he had been just sentenced to death. The trouble was that this photographer did not have the gumption to stir him up & make him look animated. There was more difference between Lincoln dull & Lincoln animated, in facial expressions, than I ever saw in any other human being. I wish I had thought to put this into my "chapter."
