Nelson Alley Kept hotel when L. first came to Salem. Plug Hat — blue jeans swallow tail coat — worked for his board — next year went to work for Saml Hill goods brought from St Louis — even after became surveyor made Hill's house headquarters —

Travis Elmore — says while L. was surveyor he stopped at Ms Rhoda Clearys — had her to mend his breeches while he sat in bed — his surveying instruments were sold also his pony by constable to satisfy debt — Bid in by Jim Short and given by him to L.
