Spgfd Ills had a meeting including the Members of the Legislature who wrote to Lincoln at Washington — or saw him in person & as it were instructed him to go for Taylor — The reason & only reason was that Clay could not be Elected and that Taylor could &c. Clay was in principal the only choice of the whigs of Ills. — That Taylor was their policy man
