459. Andrew H. Goodpasture (statement for William H. Herndon).
Petersburg, Illinois March 31st. A.D. 1869
About the A.D. 1846 Mr. Lincoln visited Petersburg and as usual quite a number of citizens gathered near to him; evinceing great pleasure in hearing him talk, and ever now and then he would tell some joke causing all to manifest pleasure in his society: after some time in his company I passed on giving attention to the business of the day, and after an hour or so I returned back along the street, and still there was quite croud with Mr. Lincoln, all in good glee, and as I was passing them, I thought I would say something, and remarked that Where the great ones are there will the peopel be. Mr. Lincoln replyed Ho! Parson a little more Scriptural; "Where the carces is there will the eagels be gathered togather:
