Assassination of the President and Secretary Seward.
We write with a heavy heart to-day. A nation is shrouded in gloom. Rejoicings are turned into mourning. The assassin's work is done. The President of the United States is taken form his great work on earth, and the chief member of his cabinet is a victim of a murderer's knife. What will be the end of this terrible work, and the effect of this fearful calamity, God only knows, and to HIM must we trust the result.
We can only refer the readers to our telegraphic columns for the details of this awful tragedy as far as received. May a controlling Providence avert the dangers so suddenly thrown upon the nation, and out of this great affliction evolve his own wise and beneficent purposes.
