Democrats of Springfield.
"Once more to the breach, dear friends!" The election day is upon us. Next
Is the great day, on which the fate of our liberties and the liberties of this country, hangs. Democrats and conservative men, every thing depends upon united, earnest and manly effort. Let there be no rest until the polls are closed!
The abolitionists are active. They are determined to win this election, by fair means, if possible, but by fool means, if necessary. They must be watched. They will tell all sorts of lies on election day. They will get up
With one or two abolition candidates on them. Beware of all such! Destroy them, burn them up! Get the
As printed at this office, and vote it — and see that none others are used.
The abolitionists will attempt to vote illegal votes, non-residents, minors, &c, Watch them closely. Where they have the power they have excluded democratic judges and democratic clerks, so as to have no one about to watch them and prevent cheating and stuffing. Let democrats keep an eye on the ballot-box until the result is known. But, thanks to heaven, and the board of supervisors, that in Springfield we have judges of the right kind. Honest, firm and true men — men whom all parties can trust and confide in.
The time in which to work is short. Let there be no laggards in the work. Let every man move at once to the front, and begin the work in earnest. We have no time to lose. NO time to enjoy ourselves in our homes, or labor at our shops and offices. Move on the enemy's works!
Let us carry the home of Old Abe for McClellan. We can do it. We must do it. Such a result would chagrin the abolitionists more than any thing else. They have a pride in carrying Springfield, but they can't do it. When the "bloody Second" ward have all voted (which must be done early!) it will give the abs. such a stunning blow between the eyes that they will not recover from it all day. Up, boys, and at 'em! And when the whole city is polled, abolitionism will be completely squelched in Springfield! Democrats of the capital city, arouse! "Work like tigers." Work as if your lives depended upon the result — for they do! What will your liberties be worth if Springfield goes abolition and Old Abe is re-elected? Not a rush! He will arrest you! He will imprison you!
And send you, willing or unwilling, to the war! To war and death to free the nigger!
Don't forget the county ticket! We must carry it! Let every democrat to his whole duty, and victory will crown our efforts. Let us on Tuesday night send greeting to the world that old Sangamon is true to the Union and democracy!
Springfield democrats, we appeal to you again to be up and doing. Our city is democratic, if we only poll our vote. It must be done. Bring in the sick, the aged and infirm.
And then see that your neighbor has voted, also.
Vote for every man on the democratic ticket. Work! democrats, work! One great effort and victory will crown our efforts.
To the poll! To the polls! No rest until they are closed! Vote for the Union! Vote for McClellan! Vote for peace and plenty and all will be well, and a glorious victory will be won!
