FROM MEMPHIS AND BELOW.

Telegraphed to the Rock Island Argus.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 31. — Private advices from Fredericksburg up to 3 p.m., yesterday, contradict the reports regarding the burning of bridges and destruction of property in that locality.

Burnside at 3 p.m., yesterday, had possession there.

Forty three wagon loads of hospital stores left here Saturday for the battle-field. A number of physicians have also gone.

Sunday 10:55 a.m. — The enemy was heavily reinforced yesterday and attacked Pope's army before Sumner and Franklin's arrival. The attack was boldly met, and a severe battle followed. The advantage, on the whole, was with the enemy, and Pope fell back to Centreville, with his whole force, in good condition, and has been joined by Sumner and Franklin. He occupies the strongest position in the vicinity of Washington, and is expected, promptly, to renew the contest.

Every effort should be made to hasten forward new troops.

There is intense anxiety to get particulars of the recent fights, but the reports are so conflicting as not to bear repetition.
