The Golden Circle.

The Chicago Times, in reference to the information vouchsafed by the Carbondale Times, that there are ten thousand Knights of the Golden Circle flourishing in Southern Illinois, says:

We hope that an energetic effort will be made by the District Attorney and other United States officers in Illinois to ascertain whether lodges of the Knights of the Golden Circle exist in this State, and if they do exist, to bring their members to trial before the Federal courts.

The suggestion is a good one and we trust it will be followed. If there are plots, intrigues and treasonable conspiracies hatching in our very midst, let us know it. Let the Grand Jury at the approaching session of the United States District Court, without fear, favor, or affection, take upon itself to investigate the truth of the rumors which are in circulation; and if they discover that there are traitors at the very hearth stones of the loyal masses of the country, let them not hesitate to indict and bring them to trial. As our Chicago contemporary truthfully remarks, "no fear is so great as that which is created by hidden danger, nor can anything demoralize a people more than uncertainty as to who is an open friend or a secret enemy."
