Jamaica, Queen' s County, June 26, 1775.
SIR: Yours of the twenty-second instant came safe to hand; in answer to which, I must acquaint you that I have made it a rule in life, never to accept any office or place of trust, unless I could acquit myself with honour.
Some time ago we had an election at Jamaica to send members to Congress, and it was carried in, the negative. These same men have acquainted me if I attend in Congress, I don' t represent them, but the minority. As for my part I have signed the Association in New-York, and expect to abide by the consequence.
I am, Sir, with great esteem, your very humble servant,
To Robert Benson, Secretary to the Provincial Congress, New-York.
