General Schuyler to General Gates

v3:835

GENERAL SCHUYLER TO GENERAL GATES.

Saratoga, November 24, 1776.

DEAR GENERAL: As it is more than probable that I should be exceedingly blamed if I left this department without a General Officer to command it in my absence, and all having left it except you, I am under the necessity of detaining you until the return of some other General Officer. You will therefore remain at Albany until further orders.

Please inform Colonel Lewis that more carriages are wanting on the portage between Fort Edward, and Lake George, and that he is to send up thirty immediately. Order him to send up fifty bars of iron, proper for shoeing what are commonly called log-sleds, which are making here to transport cannon with in winter.

I am, dear General, sincerely, your most obedient, humble servant,

PH˙ SCHUYLER.

The Hon˙ General Gates.
