General Hooper to the Maryland Council of Safety

v3:697

GENERAL HOOPER TO MARYLAND COUNCIL OF SAFETY.

Cambridge, 15th November, 1776.

SIR: Some disorders having been committed in this town on Wednesday last, by a number of people assembled together for the purpose of protecting those lately concerned in robbing the inhabitants of this County of their salt, I have judged it necessary, with the advice of the Field Officers of the two battalions in this County, to order out a part of the Militia, of one hundred men, to guard the magazine of ammunition lodged here; out of whom I mean to have fifty of them, most to be depended on, selected for the purpose of guarding the magazine while the present emergency requires it, and I shall continue them on guard, if the necessity should still exist, unless otherwise ordered by your Board.

And as it will he necessary to get some provisions to subsist the guard while stationed here, I must request you will send by the bearer fifty pounds for that purpose, for the expenditure of which I shall account with your Board.

I am, with respect, sir, your most humble servant,

HENRY HOOPER.

To the honourable the President of the Council of Safety of Maryland, at Annapolis.
