SIR: You are hereby appointed commander of our prize the snow Kitty, late from Gaspee for Barbadoes, with a cargo of fish and oil, &c˙ You are directed to navigate her with all possible expedition into the most convenient port within the United States of America. I would advise you, if it can be done without much risk, to make Rhode-Island your port. Be very careful with her cargo and stores, and keep a good look-out to prevent her being surprised or retaken.
Given on board the ship Alfred, November 15th, 1776.
